Curious Tales of a Temple – Young scholar Pu Songling encounters danger while traveling and is forced to spend the night at Lanruo Temple. As the sun sets and shadows creep across the ancient stone walls, he feels an unsettling chill in the air. Suddenly, he is captured by a toad and a turtle, mythical creatures that seem to have emerged from the depths of his imagination. They take him to the bottom of a mysterious ancient well, a place shrouded in darkness and enigma, where the boundaries between reality and the supernatural blur.

In this eerie subterranean realm, the two spirits engage in a battle of wits, competing in storytelling and forcing Pu Songling to judge the quality of their tales. Each story told echoes with the essence of ancient folklore and hints at the wisdom of ages past. Ultimately, forced into a corner by their relentless competition, Pu Songling draws upon his own creativity and resolve, and tells his own extraordinary tale, one that intertwines his fate with the spirits around him.

The film is structured in chapters, weaving a rich tapestry of narratives that reflect both the protagonist’s journey and the cultural heritage of China. The main plot, “Stories from the Well,” serves as the backbone of the film, connecting the various threads of storytelling that unfold within the depths of the well. Additionally, five adaptations of classic Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio are interspersed throughout, including “The Taoist of Laoshan,” “Princess Lotus,” “Nie Xiaoqian,” “Painted Skin,” and “The Lady of Duke Lu.” Together, these six chapters create a multifaceted exploration of myth and morality, ultimately revealing the enduring power of storytelling in shaping human experience.
